Thanks for checking out GlutenFreePDX.com!

This website is a personal undertaking, and one that has grown out of my desire to eat great local food, all while staying gluten-free. We’re certainly in a good city for fresh, unique food, and although those of us with a GF diet miss out on some of the beer and baked goods, we manage pretty darn well.  My hope is to have a website that serves as a guide to the Portland food universe, all through a gluten-free lens.

As sole operator, I can’t reach it all. If I’m missing a particular restaurant listing, I’d love your help. Send me a note!

Ben, the founder

This was a shock to me, but having a definitive answer was much preferred over having a seemingly un-curable rash.  Indeed, upon the first few shaky weeks of my new (strict!) diet, I felt a million times better. My skin cleared up, I was able to sleep, and I began to realize my new future as someone who has to eat Gluten Free.

So, after some months of adjustment, I began a quest to make the offerings in my own community easier to find, and easier to navigate. I decided to start a website that would serve as a well-designed hub, catering to all things Portland and all things gluten-free. GlutenFreePDX.com was born.   At the time, there were not many resources for the Portland GF community.  In the subsequent three years, the scene has grown, and options for us non gluten eaters have become wider.  This site has seen a big rise in web traffic from people just like you- curious, informed diners who want to know their options, and have them available to them in one convenient spot.

Thank you for your continued visits, and as long as there’s a need, I’ll be here, providing up-to-date maps, listings and news on the Portland Gluten Free scene.

Personal Background

In the winter of 2007, I was miserable. Mis-diagnosed with eczema, I had a terrible skin rash that was seriously affecting the quality of my life. I couldn’t sleep at night, I was spending hundreds of dollars on over-the-counter remedies for a condition that I didn’t even have.  After a whole lot of sleepless nights and internet searches, I came across a possible skin condition called DH. It is rather rare, can begin in someone’s mid 20s, and is described as a ‘ferociously itchy rash’.  With trepidation, I had a dermatologist perform a biopsy on me. Low and behold, I had the condition. The only known remedy? A strict gluten-free diet.
